In the retelling, Anchorette reminds us that the “intolerant” Bushies did more for gays and transsexuals than “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” Clinton or “Defense of Marriage Act” Obama—but without advertising it. (Who, after all, was the first same-gender spouse to be recognized at official State Dinners? Mary Cheney’s wife, that’s who. I could go on and on in this vein, but no one will listen.)
