Good luck, Sarah.
The problem is that the damage from Deepwater Horizon is already done, and now the administration wants to block further development not just in the Gulf, but along the East and West Coasts. What is that going to do to the Gulf states in particular?—the ones whose economies are still reeling from Katrina and this oil spill? Cutting jobs from the region can’t be the solution, and yet it’s the one that the President came up with.
What about clearing a little of the deadwood from the MMS, tightening up the regulatory loopholes, and getting on with things?

This will probably mean the end of ocean oil-drilling for the foreseeable future – while other countries merrily drill away. So much for “ending our dependence on foreign oil.
At least one other person mentioned that this might not have happened, if it weren’t for the fact that we have to drill a mile or so under water (think about that for a while), and we have to do that because they won’t let us drill closer to land.
I have a great idea! Next time there is a plane crash, institute a moritorium on all flying for 6 months!
They don’t need jobs. We can just print more money and give it to them.
Better yet a moratorium on Americans flying. What about the others drilling in the gulf? 2-3 years back I heard about the Chinese wanting to sink some wells out there. Anyone know if anything ever came of that? sarc I’ll feel real good about them drilling for oil in the gulf, I’m sure they’ll have a great sense of urgency if one of their wells blows out. /sarc We’d probably be better off developing the hell out of the gulf ourselves just to keep some of the others out. I actually worry about someone say China threatening to pull a Saddam by way of blackmail.
Yep: China is drilling in the Gulf. The oil goes to Cuba, where it’s refined in an old Russian refinery.
We’ve also loaned Brazil a few billion dollars, to finance their deep-sea drilling.
Maybe if we’re nice they’ll sell some to us.
