Please Stop Compounding the Economic Woes in the Gulf

Jindal pleads with the President to drop the drilling moratorium.

Remember that the Administration claims that BP can be stuck with the bill for this, rationalizing that it is somehow an “indirect cost” of the Deepwater Horizon disaster. But there are limits on what BP has to pay; after all, after Ixtoc, Pemex didn’t give the U.S. one thin dime, and that was a much more far-reaching oil spill than this one.

Furthermore, there is no way to compensate all of those whose industries depend upon the oil industry. Nor is there any way to get these drilling rigs back into the Gulf if they are re-deployed overseas: the ripple effects of this “six month moratorium” will last for years if the rigs don’t come back to the U.S. And they will not.
