Can We Wait Two Years?

by Little Miss Attila on June 19, 2010

According to Bruce, the situation is getting dire.

I first met Bruce in Central California within a week after the President was inaugurated. At that time I was still full of optimism about an economic rebound and the future prospects of this country. Several months later, in May of 2009, he and I ran into each other in Houston, and my hopes were still high about the nation being able to “work around” Obama; although it was clear by then that this President was not going to perform a Clintoneque pivot to the center, I still had the starry-eyed view of someone who had lived through the Carter presidency, and saw that as the lowest-possible “floor” of presidential performance. Bruce reminded me that I had spoken, in California, about Americans as being “neurotically productive,” as a way of explaining my optimism, my feeling that no President could really hold us back. After all, it had taken FDR so much work to prolong the Depression, and much as we love to lionize him publicly, surely we weren’t going to make those mistakes all over again.

“I stand by that,” I told him. “We’ll work around this guy.”

I should listen to my elders.

The next two years are going to be very painful, and we may spend another decade after that undoing all the damage from the Obama presidency.

There are tough times ahead: at the very least, this is the beginning of a full-scale depression. We will be very lucky to avert a very bloody war, of the type that isn’t fought via surgical strikes and drones in a land far away.

I think war is coming. A lead pipe cinch if Obama gets re-elected, if not, we might squeak out of it.

He won’t get re-elected. But it might be too late anyway.

I think that’s probably true.

Look at the bright side: We can still watch and prepare.

I want to see Mort Zuckerman, Peggy Noonan, Chris Buckley, et al. on one of those “I’m Sorry” websites apologizing for backing this nincompoop for prez.

Oh yeah, and David “pants crease” Brooks.

Now, I get the argument that having McCain might not have led to the conservative resurgence that we are seeing now.

But that is really small comfort to what may happen under the regime of the big O.

I said to hubby on inauguration day, now we’ll see how much damage one man can do in four years.

Well, it’s been 18 months and I DREAD the next 30.

I especially dread the 2 months that will come between the November elections and the January swearing in of the new (please Lord, please!) Republican controlled congress (at least the House, have mercy Jesus!).

I’m betting it’s amnesty for illegals, but who knows?

I am reminded of the novel Moscow 2042 by Vladimir Voinovich, in which a Russian anti-Communist hits upon the idea of destroying communism by ensuring that it is fully implemented in Russia. He succeeds; the people become so sick of it that they revolt in anticipation of a forepromised (sp?) leader, and make him Tsar when he arrives. (No, the new Tsar is not the guy who thought up the plan.)

A very amusing book. But as long as we are still alive, we can undo what Obama has done. It will take a couple of election cycles, and a Constitutional amendment or two to prevent backsliding, but it can be done.
