Is the Blogosphere Truly a Meritocracy?

I have some thoughts, but I’m hardly an objective observer. What do you-all think?

Sorta, depends on where you draw the “merit” line.

It’s a meritocracy if you go off of “good at running a blog”– getting material, getting attention, making the site not destroy your work.

It’s a popularity contest if you mean “meritocracy” as strictly “quality of articles.”

I think it’s about as close as you’re going to get.

I think a lot of mediocre people made it big because they were first.

pounce, as a historic example, do you think Sanford got rich because he was brilliant or because he was a smart businessman who happened to be in the right place at the right time?

Being good is important, but being there first when there is an opening of new territory to settle is probably more important.

I believe it’s know as “First-mover advantage.”

I agree with Foxfier and Pounce. Although, it might help to define what “merit” you are talking about.
