“A Lesson from Loughner”

by Little Miss Attila on January 13, 2011

It’s time for this country to start funding mental-health services, and balancing the rights of those with mental imbalances such as schizophrenic carefully against those patients’ own well-being, and the need to protect society at large.

Let’s get busy.

The two chief dangers of any increase to government authority in this sphere are that it will be prone to fraud in order to get money, or prone to abuse in order to go after people for the wrong reasons.

LMA may change her tune should the next version of the DSM classify “conservatism as a mental illness”…

Sorry, the lesson from Loughner is that law enforcement fell down on the job, bigtime. Loughner should have been arrested, several times during the months leading to last Saturday. After any of those arrest he should have been taken in for a psych eval. I took probably a dozen in my ownself during my career and I worked in a rural area. Heck, if we country boys (and now girls) knew to do that a modern department surely does. If the local LEOs had done their job I have no doubt that Loughner would have been committed. Having been committed he would have been unable to buy that Glock, even if the Psych workers had not been able to bring him back to earth.

It is a crying shame we do not have a real news media in America anymore, there are a whole slew of questions that need to be asked. I’d start with, why did they not arrest him and send him for a psych eval? I have read that it was because it would cause trouble for Loughner’s mother, a (medium high level?) county employee. I am reasonably sure that there would be a whole lot of questions being asked if Sheriff Doobner were a Republican. The history of Mama and Daddy Loughner’s political contributions and work would have been thorough. And if there had been none, it would have been invented.

And all this would have been done long before the revelation of the pictures of Loughner in a red thong with the Glock next to his uncovered cheek.
