I still think people are going to be in the mood for a manager, rather than an insurgent, when 2012 comes around. Someone with gravitas. I’m suspecting that gray hair and maleness may play well this time around, since “change” didn’t work out all that well for the nation.
Clearly, Romney’s chances are considered good in some circles, and Pawlenty is well placed in terms of his level of “insider-ness.” I also think that Daniels may run really strongly, given his track record on cost-cutting in Indiana–along with his ability to stay in touch with working-class concerns. (I’m not as happy with his support for ethanol subsidies, but it’s really hard to find someone who is trying to toss their hat in the ring, and is willing to buck the corn lobby at the outset–and Indiana is not the place to look for such a person, either.)
Nate Silver made the chart, and explains it here, at his NYT blog. I found it via Jazz Shaw at Hot Air.
UPDATE: Glenn apparently decided that I should look up “Crisco Twister.”
UPDATE 2: It’s been . . . altered.

Seems rather haphazard.
Disgraced former Speaker of the House New Gingrich is far less of an insider than Mitt Romney?
On what planet?
Lumps together libertarians with moderates, which is not necessarily the case. Associating Ron Paul with the word “moderate” is just hilarious, no matter how much I like the guy. Putting Ron Paul and Giuiliani on the same part of a “moderate/conservative” axis is just insane.
“Moderate” means something like “appeals to groups outside the core GOP base (but possibly runs worse with parts of the core GOP base)” whereas “conservative” here means something like “appeals to core GOP activists and base (but possibly not outside the base).”
Gingrich is ‘disgraced’? ROFL. do you have any idea what they’ll be calling Obama in just two years?
Yeah, he had to resign from office, shamed by the hypocrisy of cheating on his wives while lambasting Clinton for the same. Oh, and divorcing one wife while she recovered from cancer. kind of a whole JohnEdwards vibe, only with multiple wives.
Insider?
Who wants an insider?
Seems the chart is telling us to vote Cain — outsider, very conservative, and meets your preference for a manger.
Who am I to fight the chart?
Interesting effort. But . . . Paul is a moderate? Gingrich (the Pelosi’s global warming couch buddy) is really very conservative? Some universe!
country club republican & corn ethanol enthusiast Gingrich more conservative than Palin?
come on!
OK, this graph is CLEARLY bogus. Huckabee is a religious populist, and isn’t ANY kind of a conservative. He’s a big spending big government guy, and the only difference between Huckabee and Obama is what they plan to do with the power.
Where is Christie? He lives in Silvers back yard…
Hmmmm.
I want to see a Michelle Bachman in the running for 2012.
Why?
So she can call it The “Michelle Bachman Overdrive”!! FTW!
Hmmm.
What she’d really need is someone for VP with the last name “Turner”. 🙂
How about Micheal Turner, Republican Congressman for Ohio’s 3rd District?
The placements should be swapped for Huckabee and Daniels . . .
LTC Allen West from Florida.
Discharged early from the ARMY for doing the right thing, you already know him.
Outsider. Conservative. Smart. A real leader. And more than 50% Black!
I’d prefer a reformer- Sarah– but I’d settle for a revolutionary- Herman.
Others need not apply…
Run Romney to get 4 more years of Obama.
This makes no sense at all. Daniels and Paul to the left of Romney? What universe are you in?
With the exception of Trump and Cain I believe everyone on the list has been elected to some office, some where, some time and each time as a Republican. That makes the lot of them “insiders” in my book. Cain really is the only “outsider” on the list, at least in terms of being a well recognized political figure nationwide. Trump’s name recognition with the man on the street is as high as anyone else on the list. Your assignment, boys and girls, is to take this list and rank them from 1 to 10, 1 highest and 10 lowest on the basis of the following attributes: 1) fiscal conservative; 2) small government conservative; 3) social conservative; 4) defense hawk; 5) Republican “insider”; 6) “man-on-the-street” name recognition; and, 7) electability. That last one is your own, personal, view. You are rating each one individually, not placing them in rank order until you are done.
“Disgraced former Speaker of the House New Gingrich is far less of an insider than Mitt Romney?”
Wait … Mitt Romney is a Democrat, isn’t he? Didn’t he invent ObamaCare in Massachusetts?
It´s not her chart, Doc. RTFPA.
Your GOP Galaxy is an excellent start. It’s a good tool for mapping the state of the right. Some shifting here, a slide over there, occasional tweaks as positions clarify or change…
Keep your eye on Herman Cain. He’ll be a rising star. Don’t know him? Google him up and watch some of his videos. He has spoken at over 50 TEA Party events. He can be Kryptonite to Obama’s Superman.
“The placements should be swapped for Huckabee and Daniels . . .”
Precisely. You beat me to it.
I have a post about this graph at my site, I had originally credited or I should say blamed LMA for the graph. I’ve corrected it to show that it was a blogger at the NYT, which in my opinion explains quite a lot.
Keep in mind, Nate Silver is one of the best “horse race” people in the business, but he’s also a lefty Journolister. As such, his opinions on who’s more conservative than whom is meaningless. It would be like a CNN reporter rating the political players in a Middle Eastern uprising.
Oh, snap!
