Atlas Shrugged Part 1 Was Actually Quite Good.

by Little Miss Attila on April 15, 2011

It turns out that the rough edits I saw at CPAC were very rough, and were entirely out of context.

I’m no Randian, but its nice to see something on the screen that celebrates the act of creation–if not the Creator.

I’ll have more on the movie later, but it wasn’t like taking medicine at all: the production values were good, the characters were engaging in a graphics-novel kind of way, and the dialogue wasn’t as bad as I assumed it would be–again, seeing the pieces arranged in their proper order makes a big difference, and good actors can truly make dialogue better (by believing it themselves, and compensating for an “on the nose” line with a non-obvious delivery).

I certainly hope that Strike Productions makes the other two segments, and with the same actors playing the leads; I want to see the rest of this.

AllahP is filled with the same dread I was this morning. Not to fear: Sisu liked it as much as I did, noting the classical architecture porn, and lovely scoring.

There’s more at The Atlasphere’s blog. Also, see Ilya Somin’s thoughts on the movie–and on Rand herself–at Volokh’s blog.

A 6% on Rotten Tomatoes…not bad!

And an 85% from the audiences.

Given that Atlas is at it’s heart a political treatise, it’s not a surprising result that liberals who are paid to watch it have an entirely different opinion on it than free marketers who voluntarily gave up their own money to watch it.

Anti-capitalists hate movie praising the free-market, free-marketers disagree. Who knew? It’s probably only a question a $10mm gov’t grant can answer.

Apt comparison of character development to sharptly drawn caricature of a graphic novel. After the show yesterday I happened to suggest to the husband that someone ought to do a graphic novel of the book for those who don’t want to slog. Thanks for the nice link, Joy. 🙂

Maybe a Classics Illustrated 80-page comic? Shouldn’t have to cut much… *g*
