War Is Super-Healthy for Children and Other Living Things a Few Generations After You Kick the Oppressors’ Asses.

(In which Joy wildly oversimplifies the writings of Professor Thomas Sowell.)

Which is why democracies, and those who have values that can be taught through a bit of lightweight imperialism, should be well-armed: most of the time, the less-enlightened will be.

When literate and creative societies arm themselves, the dictators will get deposed more frequently. Then capitalism spreads, and everyone’s grandkids and great-grandkids become rich. (Consequently, they can afford lots of therapy for dealing with whatever issues their parents loaded them down with after living through the aftermath of the real horror that is war.)

Thomas Sowell explains it better than I do: how, under certain conditions, the silver lining of war and colonialism has been the transmission of “cultural capital” that has helped future generations to beat the odds and join that magic force we call the international middle class.

This is not about materialism, but rather about transcending the grinding povery that is still, in so many parts of the world, the overarching human condition.

And it is about appreciating the fact that–one way or another–the price of success was paid for by others, whether in another part of the world, or by previous generations. In blood.

Yes; I am telling you that you must buy this book, right now, and read it cover-to-cover. Do not pass “go.” Do, however, collect $200.

It is difficult or impossible to keep up with Prof. Sowell’s output–but this one is a must-read.

Freedom isn’t free, and neither is the ideal of prosperity that is actually within reach of the common woman or man.

Happy Memorial Day; be grateful, every day, for what our war dead have given us. Let’s hold onto it.

Did you list the name of the book (or a link to Amazon) and I just didn’t notice?

I’m sure it is in the video, but….

My screen shows a little icon, with a thumbnail of the book, titled “Conquests and Cultures.”

Hi Joy, I ordered the book. Do you want me to let you know when I’m finished reading it before you send me the $200? Or, you could just take my solemn promise that I’ll read it and send me the check now. 😉

You do know I’m kidding about the check, right? Have a great day.
