The Secrets of Middle-Aged Ladies

by Little Miss Attila on June 4, 2011

An open letter to life-change libido:

Here I am, with my crow’s feet and a streak of grey in my (newly styled) hair, yet in the same state of blissful-but-anxious heightened sexual alert of my 20’s. I look like a museum docent; I feel like a ho. You’ve placed [me] smack between two worlds, Libido, and though it’s a sort of wonderful agony, I have to register my profound frustration and surprise at your timing.

The same as one’s 20s? Not hardly.

I venture to say that one difference between the libido of the 20’s and that of now is that the brain that is supposed to be overseeing things has a better idea of what can go wrong, and how best to avoid it.

This is not to say that it always works

Young people are encouraged to get their minds on sex and to keep their minds on sex to a degree that older people are not, much in the same way that males of the species are encouraged to be sex-minded while women are discouraged. While there may be a physiological cause of the differing rates of readiness for sex across the age or gender divide, keeping something on the brain does tend to make the brain more prepared for it.
