You Must Give In

. . . to the lure of the fruit; Lord Voldemort wills it.

My husband saw me go to work on a pineapple recently; he had not realized how fast I’d gotten at dissassembling one and serving it up to the both of us as an afternoon snack in two Fiesta Ware soup bowls. Utterly fascinated by the quick work with the huge French-style cleaver, he asked if I’d be roasting a pig for us soon in a luau.

Most summers it’s the honeydew and watermelon I look forward to, but this summer I’ve succumbed to the husbandly desire for pineapple, and have considered buying several each time I go to the store. (Right now, FWIW, honeydew and pineapple are within ten cents a pound in price, but I have not yet determined how much the pineapple core/leaves weigh, versus the juice and seeds in the center of a honeydew, so apple-to-apple comparisons, so to speak, aren’t possible yet.)

Goodness, Lizzie–the whole point to summer lies in the tropical fruit. That’s what summer is for.

But not the strawberries; they are rarely sweet enough on their own, and really just belong in a sauce on top of short cake. But pineapple, and melon, and papaya, and mango? Angels in heaven live on that stuff, and wash it down with cold, slightly tart pinot grigio . . .

If your carbs come from fresh fruit (no added sugar) and non-starchy vegatables (no grains, no potatoes), and if you get regular exercise, you won’t have the problems described in the article immediately above this.

I never debate with a woman who is a deft hand with a big knife. ‘Specially if she’s holding it. Also, I’m now thankful I have some fruit leftover from the 4th.
