Valour-IT-Marines: A Reunion in Mesa, Arizona!

by Little Miss Attila on July 3, 2011

Here’s some more U.S.M.C. lore to remind you that it’s time to join a team (Marine, Army, Navy, Air Force) and give to Operation Valour-IT, a special project by Soldiers’ Angels. There’s more from our Marine Team leader, Howling at the Moon, here.

The cause we’re working toward is voice-activated laptops for wounded soldiers, Marines, airmen, and sailors who have sustained injuries to their hands and arms and cannot use a standard keyboard. As you, a denizen of the internet, know, one’s laptop is a critical way to stay connected with the world in the modern age, so I expect each of the four teams to meet its fundraising objective before July 14th! (But I expect the Marines to get there first–ooh rah!)

And now, the Marine story of the day:

ABC’s Brian Webb:

MESA, AZ – Two Marines injured at the same time in Afghanistan met up in the Valley Saturday for the first time since that fateful day.

“I remember every part of it,” said Corporal Robert Bruce. He was given a hero’s welcome today in Mesa where he grew up.

A dining hall was filled with a few dozen people. Bruce spoke to the crowd about his experience, while standing on two prosthetic legs.

On March 9 Bruce rushed to help a fellow Marine who had just been injured by an exploding device. When he got there another IED exploded taking both his legs.

But today was more than a welcome home, it was a surprise. Corporal Gallagher Rode, the other Marine hurt that day, came from California to say ‘hi’. He lost one leg that day. It’s the first time the two young men have been together since the incident.

“We have more brothers hurt worse than us so they are our inspiration,” Bruce said.

“It really helps the healing process to see so many people here for you doing whatever they can,” Rode said.
