Oops! Stacy’s Wrong Again.

Legalizing marijuana will not “empower the state,” except financially, which is fine: it’s legit to tax marijuana, just as it is to tax vodka or angel-food cake. What it will do is stop the rationale we are using to put a rather obscene number of nonviolent people in prison. That will save money and give people the opportunity to turn their lives around—which is awfully difficult to do when you’ve been forced to become someone’s punk so as not to be violently attacked.

Good for you, Stacy: you were clever and lucky when you were dealing dope. And you didn’t land in prison. If you had, you might see this issue a bit differently.

His reply to you seems to boil down to “police work is HARD, so we should keep unjust laws that make it easier for police to charge ‘losers’ with **something**, even though that something really isn’t the reason we want to charge them and get them off the street (because it’s just too HARD to go after them for the real harmful shit they do…)”

Hel-O-O-O? Anybody see *anything* at all wrong with this?

(That and: “some stoners are annoying, so I don’t mind if the police hassle them”)

Beam me up Scotty!
