No. Garofalo Is Not a Racist.

Date April 20, 2009

She is simply guilty of throwing the term “racism” around too lightly, and there is a huge difference, just as there is a difference between incurring Godwin’s Law and being a Nazi oneself.

Yes: it is true that bigotry against white Southerners is rampant in this country (and around the world, I believe). But I’ve spent 16 years of my live with white Southern Governors as President of this country—24 if one counts Texas as part of the “South.” It’s an unattractive prejudice, but not a real force for evil.

And regionalism is not the same as racism; I do not imagine that its proponents are any less squeamish about granting political power to black “hicks” as they are to white “hicks”/”rednecks.”

I guess I agree with you about her southern bigotry being no big deal. It doesn’t really cause southerners any damage, and in fact can be quite useful in business negotiations. But I think you may be wrong about her being a racist, Miss A.

Why is the people’s race so important to her? Why does she see Obama as a black man, like so many liberals do, and not as just another liberal from the Illinois machine like so many conservatives do? Either she doesn’t understand the conservatism, which I’ll grant you is entirely possible, or she’s one of those liberals who think that black people can’t perform as well as white people and need someone like her to defend them from greedy whitey.

    I’m thinking it’s the latter.

Determining whether something is harmful can only be done in context. It is harmful to some and not to others. But without examining the circumstances of individuals there’s no real meat to regionalism or racism.

So long as DNA-based decision making exists, and the country is not a meritocracy, then bias exists.
Clowns on the left will be taken seriously on the topic of racism when they call for the snuffing of Affirmative Action, in all its lousy forms.
But that would, like, diminish their power or something.
