it’s important to point out that the TARP distributions were foisted upon a lot of the financial institutions that got them.

Item 1: As Ed points out, it was the Bush Administration that did this, presumably to give the Obama Administration as large a toolbox as possible. (The Obama Administration remains responsible for any use/misuse thereof.)

Item 2: Going forward, watch what happens to Ford Motor Company. I’d love to come out of this mess with one (semi-)independent American car company. But then, I’m sentimental that way.
