Letterthing Apologizes. Sort Of.

Don’t you see? He’d never condone statutorily raping a girl who’s underage. All he meant to do was goof on the idea that Palin’s eldest daughter, a single mother with a baby, is a whore. Everything cool now? Let’s move on.

Josh Rottenberg runs a quotation from tonight’s show, helpfully inserting 18-year-old Bristol’s name, which David apparently fails to:

“We were, as we often do, making jokes about people in the news and we made some jokes about Sarah Palin and her daughter [Bristol]… and now they’re upset with me…” Letterman says on tonight’s show. “These are not jokes made about her 14-year-old daughter. I would never, never make jokes about raping or having sex of any description with a 14-year-old girl…. Am I guilty of poor taste? Yes. Did I suggest that it was okay for her 14-year-old daughter to be having promiscuous sex? No.” Saying he hopes he’s “cleared part of this up,” Letterman extended an invitation to Palin to come on the show as a guest.

I’m sorry; I don’t think this “apology” sounds credible. Not if he made a knocked-up joke about Willow, confusing her with Bristol, and then went back the next night to make a joke about her being a prostitute, 24 hours later, after the lightning storm had started. Or does it take multiple news cycles full of outrage before his writers bother to check their facts?

Also, the word “promiscuous” in that sentence is troubling, because it sounds like he’s still slamming the Palin women while pretending to apologize for slamming them.

Furthermore, no one has explained to me why any of these asshole men in New York thought Bristol would have the time to accompany her mother on a trip like this, given that she has an infant at home to feed.

I do think that it makes a difference whether the original target was Bristol or Willow; we must draw a distinction between innocent children (Willow) and innocent adults (Bristol). But I haven’t yet heard an explanation that I can buy about how something like this occurs, unless Dave and his writers are stupid or evil, or just so bigoted that all those teenaged slutty Palin females look alike.

And I want to believe it. I really do. I’ll watch the video later on: maybe the delivery sounds more sincere than the text does. The text makes it sound like a pro forma, “here you go, but we didn’t do anything wrong” sort of thing—yet there are ellipses in there, so obviously what I’m seeing now has been edited.

UPDATE: Gateway Pundit:

Sarah Palin should send her husband Todd on the show instead.
I’d watch that.

A lot of us would. Fortunately, we’re unlikely to have to deal with the moral conflict we’d feel if such a thing happened.

Of course it’s all diversion. Fourteen-year-old Willow was the daughter with Sarah at the ballgame which he referenced, but Bristol was the brunt of the joke? No apology that his writers just heard the news item and made the mistake of assuming that Bristol accompanied Sarah (which he would do if that’s what happened). Just ignore the central issue.” It’s all Sarah’s fault !!! Silly, not-so-bright, Sarah. She can’t even keep her daughters straight. People, I’m just a silly, silly comedian. Humble, too! When I get into trouble I always play the it-was-only-a-joke card. Lighten up. Can’t you take a joke?”

What a fucking asshole! A miserable dumb-fuck that can’t even say “I made a mistake. I thought Bristol was with Sarah at the game.” A miserable fuck that won’t be happy until everyone is as miserable as he is.

Don’t make the mistake, Sarah, of showing up on his show. He knows the facts, yet ignores them. Forgiveness is Divine, but only for those that freely and honestly confess their sins.

He’s pulling a Ward Churchill, and its sickening. To make the comments was already enough to nurture my deep distaste for Letterman, but then to avoid manning up… well, that just takes a special kind of creep.

    DAVID LETTERMAN’S HATE, etc. !

Speaking of anti-Semitism, it’s Jerry Falwell and other fundy leaders who’ve gleefully predicted that in the future EVERY nation will be against Israel (an international first?) and that TWO-THIRDS of all Jews will be killed, right?
Wrong! It’s the ancient Jewish prophet Zechariah who predicted all this in the 13th and 14th chapters of his book! The last prophet, Malachi, explains the reason for this future Holocaust that’ll outdo even Hitler’s by stating that “Judah hath dealt treacherously” and “the Lord will cut off the man that doeth this” and asks “Why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother?”
Haven’t evangelicals generally been the best friends of Israel and Jewish persons? Then please explain the recent filthy, hate-filled, back-stabbing tirades by David Letterman (and Sandra Bernhard) against a leading evangelical named Sarah Palin, and explain why most Jewish leaders have seemingly condoned Palin’s continuing “crucifixion”!
While David and Sandra are tragically turning comedy into tragedy, they are also helping to speed up and fulfill the Final Holocaust a la Zechariah and Malachi, thus helping to make the Bible even more believable!

[No, really. Excuse me while I go vomit.]

    I can picture the scene:
DL trying to be cool, TP looking at him, through him, atomizing DL’s soul with the eyes.
DL tries to stammer some questions. Monosyllable replies.
DL bursts open like an overstuffed diaper. Incoherent apologies, pleas.
    TP nods, departs.

Letterman deserves the Imus treatment-at least.
Followed by a network release condemning derogatory comments about children and/or young adults, the show should be suspended until he issues a formal apology. I know I’m dreaming. This won’t happen. Palin is white and a conservative. It is acceptable and profitable to make fun of every aspect of her life. Just ask Tina Fey and Katie Colon Couric.

Letterman has been vindictive, nasty, snotty, etc etc etc .. toward any non asshole liberal for years !! Even when he had McCain on, I just wish McCain told him to go F^&* himself.. LOL

And I think of myself as a pacifist !! I haven’t watched him for years except by mistake or a few minutes with McCain (which I couldn’t believe the smarveyness). At least Leno made an attempt of cracking jokes at both sides.
