We don’t know what’s going on; we can’t know what’s going on. As The Anchoress points out, the most likely explanations are that there is a problem with her health, or that she is going through some sort of intense personal crisis—possibly involving her family, or maybe even her marriage.

Today we are hearing the usual cries of “now her national ambitions are over!”
But of course, we don’t know that until we know the nature of the challenge she’s up against in private, and she ain’t talking. Without knowing that, it’s all just words.
If, for example, she’s taking time off to battle cancer or something of that nature, people will gladly accept her back into political life once it’s over.
Geraghty is anxious to get the corpse of Palin’s political career into that hearse.
Forget getting the facts; jackals, attack!
UPDATE: Ah, here we go: Thing 1. Thing 2 specifies a caveat, such as needing treatment for cancer. So, if there’s a crisis involved, this wouldn’t scuttle any national ambitions she might have, huh?
(Of course, if there isn’t a crisis involved, she wouldn’t be doing it—not unless she’s sick of all the shit she has to take, in which case the story would be that she’s giving up those national ambitions. Obviously.)

Why is everyone pretending to know more than we really know?
UPDATE III: Well, at least this makes a bit more sense:
Why is she resigning? We know at least two things: (1) this makes no sense politically, meaning it’s either a scandal or a health issue (2) Palin tweeted that her reason for resigning was “good news.” If it’s good news it can’t be a scandal or a health issue, unless that health issue is that she’s pregnant. My very first guess was pregnancy, in which case mazel tov except she’s going to get slammed as “irresponsible” for getting pregnant after giving brith to Trig.
Well, “everything happens for a reason.” Almost anything could be considered good news if one’s attitude were prayerful enough. (I’m not there, but I know people like that.)

She is sparing the voters of Alaska the shenanigans the Democrats had planned for the remainder of her term. As she said, since she had already decided NOT to go for a second term, why subject the voters of Alaska to that? Especially since they never signed up for the bullshit to begin with. The natural gas pipeline project must move forward and she leaves knowing that the State of Alaska is better positioned to weather the economic problems of our Nation better than most since oil prices seem to be returning to record levels.
Let’s leave speculating to those with nothing better to do.
She has my vote in whatever she decides to do, including taking a run at the Presidency in 2012 or 2016.

Please go through the full transcript of Governor Palin’s resignation speech. She is pretty clear on her rerasons and objectives. You can even do a little reading between the lines.
In reading part of the transcript of Governor Palin’s press event today it indicates quite clearly why she has decided to resign.
She intends to challange the “empty suit” Obama because she knows that the reversal of his immature and myopic socialists policies will be required to bring back the USA to a semblance of sanity.
She has clearly read the mood of the real America outside of the liberal New York and California with their dried up liberal feminists who hate all that the Governor represents. Palin is on the right track.
She has thought about this for some time but again based upon the press event I think that she made a quick decision not to delay the decision to resign.
She has made the right choice and she must choose to go forward with her political instincts and make sure that she gets savvy and clear thinking support to help her chart the course.
