Somewhere, on One of the Coasts, Barbara Fairchild Is Pouring Champagne

. . . while Ruth Reichl is grimly ordering ordering a grilled chicken breast and washing it down with a domestic pinot grigio.

Goodbye, Gourmet. May you rise from the ashes someday.

Was this the right call, if one of the two magazines had to fold?

Yes. Yes, I think it was: Bon Appetit is for cooks. It’s the more practical of the two titles, and it’s the one that is better-suited to weathering this . . . recession.

Recession: with an R. Say it, believe it. Live it.

I think this is a mistake on their part. Bon Appetit underwent a major overhaul in January of last year, and it is now so awful I can barely stand to read it, and it used to be my favorite of the two magazines. Illegible fonts, “artsy” photos that don’t do the food justice (although they seem to be improving on that front), and incredibly ugly “how-to” drawings instead of photos. I used to love taking Bon Appetit to the gym and reading it on the elliptical machine. Now I can’t read it because of the font changes.

You raise very good points, I agree. I even use Martha Stewart Every Day Food more than those for weekday meals – so good! I rarely buy all of those magazines. Publications also needed to get into the online game more, especially robust, beautifully designed online password-protected content for subscribers.
