Or simply smart enough to know which way the wind is blowing?

Shatner is beyond the petty concerns of ordinary mortals.

I agree with ponce. Shatner’s not particularly political one way or the other as far as I can tell in a quick google search. Rather, he’s a first-class showman who sees his role as entertaining his audience.

Thanks so much for the link!

Have linked you with your provocative post in an update, by the way. 🙂

Actually, he is a lefty. If he has not been terribly public about it as part of his professional persona, that is to his credit.

I totally agree. His professionalism is what sets him apart from so many fellow travelers.

Lots of folks are saying he was in on the Palin ambush. I don’t think so (judging by his reaction for the first ten seconds or so where he actually appears to be gawking, making sure it really is Palin standing there). If he really was in on the joke, he’s (and I never thought I’d say this) a really fine actor.

Um. So, he just happened to know where to stand, and the musicians just happened to know to resume playing, and Conan didn’t have to give him an apologetic look for blind-siding him, and the whole skit was perfectly blocked, and as Shatner and Palin exited they knew which way to go, didn’t bow, but strode off hand in hand and then arm in arm WITH NO REHEARSALS?

Uh. No. It doesn’t work that way. Nothing like this goes off without a hitch unless it’s been rehearsed multiple times.

Moe has more here.

You are right, Shatner is…..(gulp) a real actor.

As Moe said, Palin posted pics of her visit and one of them is with the Shat before taping.

Olbermann will probably make him TWPITW for this disloyalty to the Palin derangement bandwagon.

IMHO, Shatner is well aware of what it takes to stay successful in a business that does things no ordinary corporation would tolerate (nepotism, awarding of contracts based on political ideology, etc). Shatner was not loved by several co-stars on Star Trek but he never whined, complained or tried to score points in public. It’s helped to keep the ST universe humming along and a money maker for …42?… years.

Shatner has even learned to self-parody (these readings) to his own success.

The Shatner/Palin bit is wonderful theater. Just like when she appeared on SNL, she really is a great sport.

I wonder if the Shatner bit might just be the turning point on the anti-Palin for the sake of anti-Palin left. That’s not to say that the left won’t continue to try to savage her. But on some level, her ability to walk out arm in arm with Shatner seems to have created a more empathetic persona than when either she or McCain played along on SNL.

If it does represent a turning point she”s going to be a formidable force in 2010 and 2012. If not, it certainly can’t hurt her likability factor, which now just might be topping Obama’s (according to Rasmussen’s latest Presidential approval numbers).

I actually don’t support Palin for President. I like her a lot and I think she’s not only a great conservative but a leading edge feminist (or what should be knoiwn as a feminist, a woman who can do just about anything a man can do, plus raise a family and hold a top govt executive job with integrity and honesty).

My main problem is that I’ve never seen her say anything that makes me think she is the best we (conservatives) can do for 2012. Just because the two stooges Obama and Biden make her look (by comparison) like Thatcher is no reason to think she IS Thatcher.
