With a Near-20% Unemployment Rate, It Makes No Sense Not to Extend Benefits.

Megan McArdle has it right here.

Monty responds with an oversimplification of Amity Shlaes. I mean, I’m all for a Reaganeque “stay the course” attitude, but I can’t see why unemployment should be the starting point, where there is so much real, low-hanging, fiscally irresponsible fruit.

Megan is correct. The budget needs to be taken on and taken on seriously, but I agree, cutting back on unemployment now just shifts the problem to other social safety net programs. And BTW it is also a terrible move politically (especially just before elections this year).
