“What’s the Fastest You’ve Driven?”

Just over 110 mph, on the 210 freeway between here and the San Fernando Valley, in my 1994 Saturn.

Via Insty, who’s got me beat handily. {sigh} As usual.

182 mph down Academy Blvd. in Colorado Springs, CO.

On a highly modified Honda CB1100F.

After watching Tron with my riding buddies.

Sometimes I wonder how I survived my misbegotten youth…

Sigh. Only 120 in a stock Corvette on I-495 in Delaware back in 1993.

Because I could.

110 in a 1985 Datsun half-ton pickup on Hwy 10, between Desert Center and Blythe, in February 2002.

110 in a Datsun pickup is a feat indeed.

Back in the 70’s I test drove a stripped down and tricked out yellow Roadrunner (I wish I had bought it) on a nice straightaway I opened her up and when I hit the overdrive (4th gear) with the pedal to the metal, I looked down and the needle was buried past 120. Will never know how fast I was going but I burned 1/4 tank of gas, ah the good ol days!

Mikal, that’s on the CA side of the border, right? Risky: CHP is more aggressive (and sneakier) than their counterparts on the AZ side. Plus, they drive all those white Corvettes and black Mustangs with no lightbars and itty-bitty little CHP insignias on the doors. Of course, their favorite stomping ground is the Interstate 5; I got stopped so many times between here and the Bay Area when I was in my 20s.

But they’re certainly in evidence on the 10. HIghway patrol: can’t live with ’em, can’t live without ’em . . .

I think I got my 1979 Monte Carlo up to 100, may be 105. The numbers on the cars speedometer stop at 80. I estimated the speed by how far the needle went past 80. That was in 1983 or 84 on the Mass Pike after 2:00AM.

I would have tried to go faster but another car pulled up in the right hand lane and just sat in my blind spot. I decided not to try and pull away from this car but to slow down and let him pass. As I slowed up he would also slow up. When I got down below 80 he finally passed me. It was a State Trooper. I’ll never know why the trooper didn’t pull me over, he just kept on going.

120+ in a ’66 Chrysler Newport on FM 2004 between Freeport and Texas City, Texas. In 1979 this was a deserted 2-lane passing by a deserted WWII blimp port. A member of the Freeport rugby team had injured my shoulder with a cheap shot, and I was pissed off. And driving with one arm, and probably no seatbelt.

But I’ve ridden at 140 in a 68 Charger and a 68 GTX on a 2-lane between Potsdam and Massena in far north NY. 140 was the limit because even as a passenger you could feel the front end starting to float. Back in ’75 and ’76.
