Wishing Her Luck with a Capital “Pl”

Via Hot Air, a report than Susan Boyle has plucked her eyebrows, which seems to me like a sensible thing to do.

Reports are that she did not got to any sort of “fancy” stylist, so she either did it herself or had it done locally.

Good for her; she must do as she likes from inside the fishbowl, and never mind what others think.

I think she has also trimmed her hair, which is too bad: I was hoping she’d grow it out, instead. But she had to go one way or the other, rather than this in-between stuff.

It is part of human nature to want to adorn one’s body and dress well. The fact that someone might have come from limited resources (not working a lot outside the home), and might have had very limited time in the past (being a caregiver) does not mean that they aren’t interested in looking good: only that they haven’t had a lot of time or money to invest in it.

I’ll have to stick with the opinion I heard attributed to Slate: this woman can do what she likes with her looks, and must steer her own course. She’s entitled to any help she wants in that regard, but one wouldn’t want to see control of something that personal wrested away from her.

Of course, she’s already taken care of two items from my personal list of “things I’d do differently if I were her” (the eyebrows and the hair). Now all she needs is to get acquainted with her skin tones, and figure out what makeup/dress fabrics set ’em off a bit better.

Or not.

I cannot believe I got drawn into this discussion. I intend to think of a way to blame it on my older brother somehow, but I’m still working on that rationalization. When it is completed, though, it will be a masterpiece.

Myself, I’m hoping she really wanted what she’s gotten into now. Fame has its downside, including swarming papparazzi, petty sniping by gossip columnists and the general internet nastiness that celebrities suffer.

But then fame is not something that motivates me, so it’s hard for me to really relate. Maybe it’s worth it to her.
