I Just Got My Orders from Boss J.

He has given me the following assignments while I’m in Texas:

1) eat some real barbecue;

2) eat some chicken-fried steak.

I’ll try to do the BBQ, though that is the sort of thing that they heap upon one’s plate, which brings up a huge set of mental calculations regarding just how many meals this will actually provide me, and a temptation to ask that they simply serve it in polystyrene, for easy portability.

I do hope that there’s a fridge in the hotel.

Chicken fried steak is an excellent idea; I used to get that after a backpacking trip in the Yosemite backcountry. There was a café there near Tuolome Meadows in the 1970s and 1980s that was the only eatery for miles around. It served things like beef stew, chicken fried steak, and red wine: my father, my brother and I would eat there after several days in the wilderness. Awesome, but we were often surrounded by people who’d been out of touch with civilization for several weeks. I knew the food tasted even better to those folks.

There’s nothing like Real Food when you’ve been living on the dehydrated stuff for too long.

If in San Antonio, come on over for a margarita and some REAL BBQ! I think chicken fried steak is an acquired taste. But I also think drinking Lone Star beer is one, too. (YUCK). Now if you want to go really native, you need some flour tortillas (handmade) and frijolies!

You need to mosey on up to Bryan, and sample the Dixie Oil Company’s CFS. Delish! But if you’re not in the mood for that, there’s always the Deathburger.
