is having one’s friends go broke at the same time. Naturally, this is happening to me a lot, lately, as people I know start to lose their jobs. I’ve been living largely hand-to-mouth since the spring of 2002, and I’m used to it; it can be the occupational hazard of the creative life. But I do not like seeing this happen to other people.
