Here’s What Upsets Me About “Fistgate” and the Kevin Jennings Situation [UPDATED to Reflect Parody Status].

by Little Miss Attila on December 12, 2009

Dan Collins has the [body text of the] infamous flyer reproduced on his blog large enough for it to be legible [as part of a parody thereof], and it looks like a pretty tame piece of business that tells young people how to keep their disease profiles low if they happen to be experimenting sexually with some of the wilder stuff (including the act that Christopher Isherwood explained he didn’t do because “the Surgeon General has determined that it’s hazardous to your health” [which I’m pretty sure was a joke, since he said it in, like, 1981, before mainstream America was talking much about fist-fucking]).

But it made me mad, and here’s why: look at the type on the left-hand side of the page—read those titles. Then look at how the titles are positioned on the right-hand side of the page. They are positioned differently, and the reason is that the type is not compressed like it is on the right, so they had to place them oddly, rather than in that same “hanging indent”-like position.

The positioning doesn’t match. The type treatment doesn’t match.

This isn’t “Fistgate”; it’s Fontgate!

UPDATE: Dan points out that his flyer is a parody, and that the original had a doctor-like guy, rather than a takeoff on the Bob’s Big Boy icon.

But my point still stands; the original has the same shitty typography.

No, no! The image at my place is a photoshop with Big Boy where the doctor character from the original is. The original image is available here.

I really don’t understand how people can’t see that the intent of that book is to prevent STDs not to corrupt teenagers.

The Big Boy character has two left hands, also.

‘feets, why would a book intended to prevent STD’s include a list of gay bars? And why would a book distributed to high school students include a list of gay bars? And what does “Hey, Queer Boys! Isn’t this a great time to be gay?” have to do with preventing STD’s?

Yes, preventing STD’s is in there, but there’s significantly more to it than that. And that more is inappropriate for high school.

Or, for school, period.

Well, “a great time to be gay” may be a way of helping to prevent teen suicide.

Seriously.

Bars can be pretty good for suicide prevention too, so maybe they’re on to something.

Well, at first blush the bar thing looks like it’s out of bounds for underage kids. And my emotions on that one are mixed. And Darleen will be along any minute to squabble with me. (Our epic fights are usually on the subject of parental notification laws for abortion, but now that my church sponsee is starting to notice boys my opinion may just flip on that, rather abruptly.)

But in areas where there aren’t a lot of community service centers that have a gay/bi focus, bars may be the best option for young gays to find a few people like them.

I’m not thrilled with the alcohol and the premature sexual awareness stuff, but the larger enemy for gay kids is isolation.

Are the bars/clubs all ages? When I was in high school there were clubs we could go to. Some even had gay nights.

I don’t know much. I mean, I hung out with the gay/bi kids in high school and college, so I sort of knew where to go. I’m not much of a bar person, except when I’m hanging out with bloggers.

But I’m from L.A., and the more isolated a town gets, the tougher it is for that percentage of kids who have whatever propensities.
