Full-Body Scans

by Little Miss Attila on December 30, 2009

. . . are very costly and invasive.

I really don’t see any reason to deploy them without any kind of probable cause. They are fine as an alternative to a pat-down, but to make them a primary screening tool rather than a last resort strikes me as backward.

See this interview with an Israeli security expert, who points out that it would be an outrage to deploy a body-scan in the Middle East, where notions of female modesty are quite different than they are here.

I see no reason to give State and Homeland Security their dessert until I see that they’ve at least tried their main course—which would consist of keeping Islamic extremists with murderous intent off of airplanes.

With full body scans you would have women security watching women passengers. vice versa for men. You do not have men and women going through at the same time.

And frankly if that discourages devote muslims from flying…well that is their problem.

I am NOT for getting body scaners at every single security point. I would have them available at major airports for those passengers who are profiled and determined to be a risk. I am all for profiling. I am all for common sense methods to throw terrorists off. Profiling alone, however, is not a panecea. And I know El Al knows that because I have seen them do it.

I don’t actually care — frankly, seeing me naked is sufficient punishment for seeing me naked. They’ll have to set up a separate section of LAX for the tabs and paperazzi bidding on cellphone pictures of Britney Spears, Beyonce, or Miley Cyrus. Quickly enough, some $15 an hour TSA drone will figure out a way to get a snap out and sell it to TMZ for $100K.

I would rather be scanned that have an airport backroom TSA colonoscopy (without the drugs). Ouchy.

They don’t substitute for that; the scans won’t show what’s in a body cavity.

Bummer, I was hoping for scanners that could show packs of cocain in mule’s stomachs or bombs shoved up terrorist’s butts.

Don’t be so dismissive. Under ObamaCare, that’s about the only colonoscopy you’ll qualify for.

They’d be better off with the chemical sniffing booths. You might have to show up a few days early, though, until they increase the throughput.
