Let’s Make a Love Connection.

San Francisco is declaring war on Phoenix. Why not? They’ve been trying to jump-start some sort of rivalry with L.A. and the rest of SoCal for years. It’s kind of cute.

As someone whose second crime novel is actually set in Phoenix, I’d like to point out that it’s got a subtler beauty than SF does—and Phx is actually one of Arizona’s blandest cities. I know that the Grand Canyon is a bit of a trek, but it’s worth seeing; the painted desert / petrified forest isn’t as far off the beaten track, and it’s nine kinds of awesome.

But Greater Phoenix itself, though not as “southwestern” as Tucson, or as bitchin’ High Desert as Flagstaff, is more than “the Las Vegas of Arizona.” It’s got interesting canals, a wisp of the Old Southwest, more cacti than one can shake an expense account at, jillions of black-leather bikers, handy public transportation and . . . a salt river to go with its freshwater canals.

If I were planning a convention, I’d put Phoenix higher on the list than SF. And I happen to be very fond of SF.

But any peace talks would naturally occur . . . well, in L.A.
