Actually, the Last Word on Dave Weigel Comes from . . . Dave Weigel.

He accuses himself of “hubris,” and suggests that he treated the JournoList like a “dive bar.” In retrospect, he feels that he climbed “too fast” up the ladder of Beltway journalism, and seems to suggest that it might have inflated his ego a bit.

Anyone who wanted to force me out of this business will have to settle for the consolation prize of me having to tediously inform sources of a new e-mail address. No serious journalist has defended the leak of my private e-mails; no one who works in politics or journalism would accept a situation where the things they said off the record could immediately become public. But no serious journalist — as I want to be, as I am — should be so rude about the people he covers.

Read the whole thing. It’s clearly an apology—and a good one.

It was a standup thing to write, and it was gutsy to publish it in Big Journalism, too: I’m grateful to Michael Walsh and Andrew Bretibart for running. So although my emotions have been mixed about this whole Weigel episode from the beginning (I’ve never been able to decide whether he was more sinned against, or more sinning), I do respect his taking this step.

Also, the damned piece is well-written, and I’m a bit of a sucker for that.

So, um . . . I’m sorry I made fun of his acne scars.

Pax et lux, Dave.
