A Woman’s First Revolver!

by Little Miss Attila on December 8, 2008

Always such a special moment; I’m blinking back the tears. White lace and promises!—they look so . . . so beautiful together.

Rightwing Sparkle and her new best friend!

I’ve been told that we mustn’t criticize the fact that there is a picture of her on that post with her finger (loosely) on the trigger; she will be taking a firearms safety class. (If only those who produce posters for Hollywood films were required to do the same!) I just hope she takes that finger-on-the-trigger-before-being-ready-to-fire thing into the confessional.

I hope that the entire shooting sports industry is planning on sending Barack Obama a very nice Christmas card!

Hammerless is the right choice, and if I ever get another snubbie (to replace my beloved Betty, the one my mother stole), I might go hammerless. It’s fun to draw the hammer back at the range and fire a wheelgun double- single-action (and it makes the trigger pull very light, reducing my shot groups a bit)—but for a defensive weapon there’s little point to having the hammer, and when one must carry in an emergency situation it’s safer not to have to worry about having the hammer snag on one’s clothing.

RWS credits the purchase to Obama, who also lit a fire under my ass; I just rejoined the NRA, after using various financial excuses to put it off. The move was only partly political, inasmuch as I really need to start hunting, and being a member gets me access to some of their longarms instruction resources, which are the best in the country.

Ideally, I could find a hunting outfit that caters to beginners, and just once in my life, take a deer. (None of my colleagues have hunt with a beginner since they were twelve years old: their idea of “just starting out hunting” is going on one’s first safari for Cape Buffalo. I’m sure they would be happy to help me find a great guide for taking a Dall Sheep, too; but that doesn’t happen to be the level I’m at.)

UPDATE: Single-action vs. double-action issue corrected above; I’m working too fast, here. But don’t call me “Lady.” I know some of those, but I sure as heck ain’t one.

Sorry, lady, but when you thumb back the hammer and fire, that’s single action. Firing a hammerless or any revolver by pulling the trigger is double action.

Slips of the finger are not slips of knowledge.
She knows.

My apologies for calling you, “lady.” When and where I grew up, it was akin to calling a strange man, “pal,” or “bub” and nothing derogatory was intended. I hope she will take the next step, which depending on where one lives, would be to get a concealed carry permit. I’ve carried a pistol daily for 45 years, usually with a permit but often without, never had to use it or draw it, hope I never will have to, but wouldn’t be without that insurance.

If you wanted to make your way to Minnesota some fall, I’d take you out. I hunt with a bow. My wife’s bow would probably fit you pretty well. A couple of days of practice with it and I’m sure you’d be good to go.

In most of the state, folks hunt deer with shotgun slugs (they don’t carry as far as a rifle shot–with as many hunters as we have, too many would shoot each other). In the western part of the state folks do use a rifle.
