Contra Rush Limbaugh, I hope Obama succeeds. Not, perhaps, with every little goal he might set (I suspect we do not see eye-to-eye on single-payer medicine, for example).
But as of tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m., he is my President.
And, is it bitchin’ cool to see another arbitrary barrier to achievement broken in this country?
Well. Yes. It is.
I do hope he succeeds. I may define “success” slightly differently than do many of my friends who voted for Barack Obama, but it’s perfectly likely that I’ll get a more things from my wish list over the next four years than they will from theirs.
Which is a shame. Sort of.
Though I have to tell you with respect to Limbaugh that the fact that he is so resistant to the tugs of popular sentiment makes me even more receptive to his own message. Does no one else remember after Oklahoma City, when he got impatient with callers that were sure whatever had happened, it had to be Bill Clinton’s fault?
He said, IIRC, something like, “I am behind the President on this.” I do not think that is verbatim, but I do recall that the way he pronounced the word “President” carried a special emphasis. There was a don’t-fuck-with-me air about that statement.
In other words, Limbaugh respects the system. Part of the system, as he sees it, is to remain the loyal opposition, with more emphasis on the word “opposition” than the word “loyal.” If America is attacked in the next four years, the respective emphases on those words will be transposed in a hurry.
