“Land It in the Hudson.”

The Urban Dictionary sent me a note this morning:

January 27: Land it in the Hudson

An expression used to encourage yourself or someone else when it appears an endeavor is headed for a disastrous outcome (due mostly to external conditions). Based on when Sully averted tragedy by successfully landing US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River. See also, “Land it like Sully.”

The company is on the brink of failure, so let’s Land it in the Hudson.

A the H and I use the Aliens quote—not so much for averting disaster, but to express when everything is “square,” lined up correctly and going per plan: “in the pipeline, five by five.” That pilot may be one of my favorite minor characters from that film, with her “fly the friendly skies” helmet and her quick draw on the sidearm (though of course it was not quite quick enough).

In related news, Texan/Californian Sullenberger is home now. (For those who don’t know, Danville is a small town in Northern California, one of many that is near enough to the East Bay Area to be within its sphere of influence—but distinctly its own place. I do have relatives-by-marriage there. And: the East Bay means Oakland, Berkeley, and places like that. San Francisco, aka “the city,” may be the most well-known town in the area, but it’s separated from the other towns by an extraordinarily beautiful body of water. There will be a quiz later on.)
