The Golden State

. . . is in trouble.

Fortunately, it still has amazing resources—cultural, physical, and psychological—and it will transcend this recession. But dealing with the mismanagement of the nation’s economy and the state’s at the same time will hobble us.

Recovery may take longer here than it does in the country at large.

My brother works in software development, and tells me that he knows a lot of people who are out of work, “and our industry isn’t even that hard-hit.”

“Yeah,” I responded. “But it’s here.”

Our downturn in the aircraft biz here in Wichita hit home again on last Thursday. My daughter was laid off from an aircraft cabinet/furniture manufacturing company. Things are getting bad in the aircraft industry in a town that is the center of that industry. It doesn’t affect just the airplane builders but the subcontractors and suppliers as well. The company that laid me off is down to 10 airplanes this year on each of four jet lines. Cessna may drop one version of it’s Citation line completely.
Just an update from the heartland.
