There’s an interesting debate on the subject here, which no one has thought to drag any data into. And it’s just as well; the discussion is more interesting right now without it.
I’d say that people—and by that I mean women*—are probably a bit skinnier in the coastal cities of SoCal than in the rest of the country, but I don’t think that trend extends inland. Nor does it apply to the Bay Area, where I think an overweight appearance may be seen as a potential handicap, and a sort of opportunity for showing how unprejudiced one is.
* Okay; that was a joke. Sort of.

If you want a scientific survey, you have to exclude all of the druggies (who are underweight) and people on public assistance (who tend more towards obesity).
