Carol is pissed off over the attempt to co-opt 9/11; I probably lean more toward AllahP’s feeling that it simply cannot be done. I remember the zeitgeist. I remember the moment. I remember the pain and the rage. Most of us do, and that isn’t just a right-of-center phenomenon.
But what Carol does is reproduce one of the many terrible images from 9/11. It’s one we need to look at a lot. I know someone who made printouts of several of the people who fell like lumber that day, and he takes them out and gives them a good hard look when things get tough in the War on Terror.*
If the far left wants a rationale for drinking beer on a national holiday, they are welcome to try—just as they are welcome to celebrate Independence Day on May 1st if they like. And they can wear black on the 4th of July, too.
But it will be a rather lonely, pointless exercise.
Matt is also upset, though.
* Yes, yes: it’s a war against a noun. We’ve had those before: The Axis. The Germans. The British. Much better than fighting against verbs, no? Unless, of course, you are, like me, at war with Verbing.

I like to rephrase it as the war against the terrorists.
I think the problem that some (many?) express is not that it is a war against a noun, but a war against a method of fighting. The Axis, the Germans, the British were all definable groups of people (nations) who had declared war against us. The “War on Terror” is a euphemism that conveniently sidesteps just *who* it is employing terrorism.
But oh! We can’t be Politically Incorrect, can we? It might cause those nasty radical Islamist mullahs with their nasty deluded fanatical followers to have hurt fee-wings. And we know what nasty radical Islamists do when their fee-wings are hurt. Why they up and do *more* of the same stuff that made us point and say, “you are a nasty deluded terrorizer of innocent civilians, you nasty radical Islamist fanatic, you!!”
