And More on Domestic Violence.

by Little Miss Attila on December 8, 2009

Since I was out most of the day yesterday I missed this post over at Cassandra’s place, where she underscores her belief in one standard, and explains just how bad it was in the bad old days, when DV got swept under the rug.

And Cassandra appears to believe, as I do, that one incident is often not enough to establish a pattern of violence within a family; it’s that overarching pattern that has to be looked at if the state is going to become involved.

And yet, these things can get serious in a hurry:

When Tiger Woods was brought to the Health Central Hospital in Ocoee, Fla., his condition was more serious than previously reported. According to a person with knowledge of Woods’ hospital admission, the star golfer had to be admitted directly to the hospital’s intensive care unit, where he was immediately intubated and his breathing stabilized.

Also, there’s clarification about the police interview with Woods’ neighbors, who called 911. At the time of the 911 call, neighbor Jarius Lavar Adams told dispatchers that Woods was asleep on the lawn, snoring. “Although the body can snore in any state of unconsciousness, it’s unlikely he was snoring,” said the source. “That was the sound of an airway that wasn’t stable. That’s part of the reason there was an intubation when he got to the hospital.”

After Woods underwent treatment, he was extubated, then immediately released home. One physician from the hospital said that discharging a patient directly to his home after being admitted to the ICU was “highly unusual.” The doctor, who did not treat Woods, said standard protocol “usually involves some sort of step-down — if your condition is serious enough to be admitted to ICU, you don’t go straight home. It points to some extreme privacy measures being taken for that decision to be made.”

I guess it could have been domestic violence, but I’m not ruling out a drug overdose.

Assuming that all the tabloid stuff is true then the only good thing Tiger did is hold to the old “don’t hit the girl” dictum we grew up with. If only he could have kept his zipper up except when at home.

The worst bullying I ever experienced at school came from a girl who knew that by virtue of the equipment between my legs, I was socially prohibited from hitting back.

Those who obsess about how husband-on-wife DV was swept under the rug way back when (and still is, in a lot of the world) would do well to consider how little wife-on-husband abuse is even admitted to exist. And I wouldn’t be too ready to interpret the overwhelming balance of reported abuse (heavily towards male-on-female abuse) as indicative of the actual prevalence of either variety; given the stigma accorded to “weak” men, they are certainly reluctant to speak out.

From what I have read, DV begins early in the relationship, bringing that relationship to an early end if the other partner is intolerant of this conduct.
