No, No Cold Case Reruns Today.

I thought I was looking forward to them, as I try to master their little world. But I need a nap, and a session on the housework this afternoon, more than I need two episodes’ worth of character development in an intriguingly formatted television show.

Yes, I’m thinking of writing one. No, no—not to submit to the Executive Producers. That’s a big taboo. I just think it’s an interesting form that they’ve created. Their flashbacks are set up so they look like they will be the equivalent of first-person storytelling. Yet those flashbacks represent Objective Reality on the show: they are framed by subjective perceptions, but are not such themselves. The viewer learns, over time, that he/she can trust those flashbacks to be truthful, if not complete. And they are usually given in chronological order.

Left-leaning? Sure. Sentimental? Well, yeah. But they are interesting little vignettes, all the same. And I can buy the characters, which always makes television slightly less embarrassing to watch.
