. . . is over at HillBuzz
Tell the following four “family-friendly” companies you will no longer be patronizing them as long as they continue to advertise on Letterman or CBS (yes: it counts if the company buys a banner ad and CBS places that ad on the Letterman pages within its website):
• Mars Candy
• The Olive Garden
• Kellogg’s
• Johnson + Johnson (so no more of their ear swabs, or K-Y jelly)
The bois at Hillbuzz recommend that we start with those, though I would definitely place equal emphasis on his racing endeavors:
Rahal Racing, www.rahal.com/corporate
www.indycar.com
http://automobiles.honda.com/ (Honda supplies Letterman’s cars with engines)
http://www.bobbyrahal.com
And then here are the other advertisers:
Microsoft (Bing)
Boston Market
Best Buy
Icy Hot
Wyeth (Centrum Vitamins)
Chase Bank
Macy’s
Kia
T-Mobile
Cadillac
Merck (Rogaine)
Cricket
Samsung
Sanofi-Aventis (Ambien) [looks like I’ll be using generic from now on]
Mazda
Jet-Dry
Saturn
eBay
Intel
Lexus
TV.Com
On the Border Restaurants
CBSsports.com
John Freida haircare
DiTech
Earn My Degree
True Credit by Trans Union
Bowflex
Hillbuzz continues to take the position that Letterman knew exactly which Palin daughter was at the baseball game (which I believe), and that it still counted as rape once Letterman “transferred” the joke to her older sister (which I don’t believe: the underlying joke has to do less with underage sex than with the notion that “all those Palin women are sluts”).
What I do believe: David Letterman is a sexist pig who has no idea what kind of power he’s just unleashed. He’ll find out, though. But we’re going to have to keep at this for multiple months, and fight this fight alongside some other very direct and important campaigns, such as the summer tea parties; the fight against screwing up our health-care system (or against screwing it up more, if you prefer); the dire need to walk back the national debt to avoid badass inflation that will really ream the elderly and those on fixed incomes; reversing the rate of unemployment; and the huge priority of averting the economic vandalism that “cap and trade” could provoke.
So we do have our hands full, through the midterm elections. But I’ll be damned if I’m going to buy Kellogg’s cereal, or renew my T-Mobile contract. I don’t care if it takes me months to fully sever all my ties to those who support CBS/Letterman: I’ve got plenty of time, and this is important to me.
And, a reminder: the Letterman/CBS issue is not a left-right issue; not is it Rebpulican-Democrat. After all, the HillBuzz bois trend Democrat. This is about women and girls having some human dignity, and being treated as equals, and taken seriously.
More from HillBuzz:
If David Letterman had made jokes about blacks instead of women, he would be unemployed today.
h/t Redstate: “New York lawmakers are calling on CBS to fire David Letterman.”
While we do not believe Letterman will be fired, we do believe if we keep up the pressure on Letterman’s advertisers and succeed in getting three big names like The Olive Garden, MARS Candy, and Kelloggs to drop sponsorhip of the Late Show, that we can seriously decrease the prices CBS is able to charge for advertising on his show, making Letterman much, much less of a cash cow for the network. If that happens, and if Letterman’s brand and earning power is damaged irrevocably, then expect Letterman to conveniently announce health problems next year that will end his run at CBS a few years early (his contract was just re-upped to 2012).
There will be a rally/protest against Letterman on Monday June 15th in New York City outside the Ed Sullivan theater, just as Letterman starts taping his Monday episode at 430pm EST.
This is the sort of thing Al Sharpton would organize each and every day against CBS if Letterman had made disgusting racial remarks, instead of a “joke” about the statutory rape of a 14 year-old girl by New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez.
The New York rally needs as big a turnout as possible — and Tea Party style, we need to organize rallies in other major cities going forward too, all aimed at the local CBS affiliates.
Does your town have a CBS “window on the world” style studio where the morning news is broadcast with an open window looking out to the street? If so, head over there with signs condemning Olive Garden, MARS Candy, and Kelloggs for supporting the statutory rape of minors by way of sponsoring Letterman’s program.
Scare the living daylights out of Letterman’s advertisers, get them to drop this show, and CBS will then be forced to deal with Letterman once and for all.
Tell everyone Al Sharpton sent you, and learn from the master.
